Our Impressions of The Recreation Ground

This ground has a capacity of 7,000, with traveling fans being allocated 800 seats in the main stand, and 2000 tickets for the open ended terrace.

The ground itself is rather dated, and in need of some modernisation. The seats in the main stand are still wooden, and one end of the terracing is not covered. This is one of a growing number of clubs looking to re-located in the next few years, so watch this space!

Directions to The Recreation Ground

By Road

From North, South, East (M1)

Exit the M1 at junction 29, and follow the signs for Chesterfield (A617). Follow the A617 for about 5 miles, and at the roundabout take the 2nd exit, signposted Town Centre (A619). Follow the A619 (Markham Road), and after about a mile, turn right into Foljambe Road at the roundabout in front of KFC Express.

By Train

The station is less than a mile from the ground, so it's well within walking distance. Exit straight out of station, and then turn left into Corporation Street, go straight across the crossroads, keeping the Chesterfield Hotel on your right hand side. Continue over the footbridge, and then turn right at the Derbyshire Times (...signposted town centre). Cross over Tapton Lane, to the large roundabout with car park. Walk through the car park, past the Comet, towards The Manhatten public house. The ground is about a 5-10 minute walk along Saltergate, on the right.

Pubs Near The Recreation Ground

The Chesterfield Arms

Located at the corner of Newbold Road & Queen Street, this is a smart, traditional pub with a very friendly atmosphere. The public bar hosts a pool table and Sky TV. Goof food is served on most match days.

The Industry

This pub is located in Queen Street (...and is next door to the one above!). This pub is split into three section, with Sky TV, a pool table, and also features a children area. If the weather is nice, there is also a nice beer garden

The Masons Arms

Located in Chatsworth Road. This is not really a footie pub, and is more of a local's haunt. There is a large screen TV, showing Sky sports, and also a pool.

Local Hero's

Located in Saltergate. This pub has been recently refurbished, and features a lot of sports memorabilia, including some from Chesterfield's 1997 FA cup run.

The Barley Mow

Mr Chandler a QPR fans has dropped us an e-mail, and says 'As a QPR fan who visited Chesterfield on Saturday 15th December 2001, the above pub should be avoided as it is not 'friendly' for away fans.' He goes on to say 'Also, Police can be very heavy handed, taking photographs and personal details of ALL fans travelling by train. Strange as QPR fans do not have a 'reputation'. With some of our fans being beaten up after the game, Chesterfield is a place stuck in the 1970's! Shame, as like us, they need as much support as possible, especially as the fans themselves have bought the club.'
