Nick Name:

Our Impressions of Humber Doucy Sports Centre

The ground contains two pitches. The main one consists of a small stand near the halfway line with covered standing accommodation on both side and a small covered standing area along the half way line on the far side of the pitch. The second (far) pitch has no spectator cover.

To the right of the entrance is a clubhouse with bar and a television in one corner. During a Saturday game Radio Suffolk is broadcast on a speaker outside the clubhouse so the nearby spectators can hear the latest scores elsewhere and commentary on any Ipswich Town game being played. The clubhouse contains both ladies and gents toilets. The gents are also accessible from outside.
Beyond the clubhouse is the officials changing rooms and then the changing rooms for the second pitch

To the left is a portacabin for officials and guests and beyond that a second portacabin with a kitchen that serves hot food and drinks.
The club started out as a Sunday League side in the 1970's and have progressed to being the most senior club in Ipswich after Ipswich Town despite their small gates and restricted finances.

Directions to Humber Doucy Sports Centre

By Road

Follow the A14 towards Felixstowe. After you cross the Orwell bridge, take the Ipswich East (first) exit. Turn left at the bottom of the slip road towards Ipswich. At the first roundabout go straight over (exit to the right of The Thresher pub). Be wary here. A new estate is being built to your immediate left before this roundabout and the roundabout layout has been altered. If you are in the wrong (left hand) lane immediately prior to the roundabout you could end up heading north-west along Nacton Road. After the roundabout continue straight over the next roundabout. You will then pass under a railway bridge and come to a third roundabout with a Sainsbury's Superstore and Homebase directly ahead. Turn left on to the Felixstowe Road. You will eventually come to another roundabout. Continue straight across (second exit) both this and the next (Foxhall Road) roundabout. The road will eventually widen into two lanes. Move into the outside lane as early as possible. Continue through the traffic lights outside Ipswich Hospital and at the next roundabout (A1214) take the second exit, which takes you to the right. Take the first left onto Playford Road and then the first left again onto Humber Doucy Lane. The ground is a few hundred yards along on the right on a right-left 'S' bend in the road. Be a little cautious entering and leaving the ground as the winding road offers reduced visibility. All data supplied by Richard from Ipswich - 07th September 2000

Car Parking

The Humber Doucy Lane ground is has a reasonable sized car park, which is shared by a bowls club. This is partly tarmac with potholes, partly grass and partly what looks like an old tennis court. The drive to the car park has a number of quite severe speed bumps and is only wide enough for one car in places. The entrance to the ground is near the far end from the car park entrance.
Football Nearby.
Further out along both sides of Playford are the Ipswich Town Training Grounds and Academy sites where you could find the Ipswich town under 17 or under -19 sides playing (11am kick-off on Saturdays) .
To the north of the Academy site is the Rushmere Sports Centre which has three pitches and is home to long established Suffolk and Ipswich League (SIL)clubs Westerfield United and Ipswich Exiles. Next Door to the Rushmere Sports Centre, with an entrance in Rushmere Road, is the Ipswich YMCA Rugby club. Don't let this put you off as they also have two football pitches used by SIL sides Cranes Sports and John Bull United. All four of these clubs have reserve teams so there is an excellent chance of finding one or more matches at these venues.
All Suffolk and Ipswich League Games kick off at 2.30 pm (2.00pm November to February)
And Finally...
If you arrive and find the match is off the nearest Jewson League Clubs are Woodbridge Town, Felixstowe & Walton United, and Whitton United (on the other side of Ipswich).
