Our Impressions of Elland Road

Elland Road is a modern stadium with a capacity of 40,200, consisting of enclosed two tiered stands around 3 sides of the ground. The exception is the huge East Stand which dwarves the others. This stand has been well integrated into the rest of the stadium, but it's scale and facilities leave whats left looking a little sorry for itself.

As an away fan you will find yourself located in the South East corner of the South Stand. The facilities here are basic by comparison to many of the more modern Championship and Premiership grounds we have visited. When we visited the half time queues were huge - almost to the point of us giving up on waiting for fear of missing any of the game we'd travelled so far to see.

By Road

From The North

Take the A58 or A61 into Leeds city centre. Follow signs for the M621 to join motorway. After one and a half miles, leave M621 and at roundabout join A643 into Elland Road for Leeds United FC.

From The South

Take the M1 then M621 until junction with A643. Leave Motorway and at roundabout join A643 into Elland Road for Leeds United FC.

From The East

Take the A63 or A64 into Leeds city centre then follow signs for the M621 to join motorway. In one and a half miles leave Motorway and at roundabout join A643 into Elland Road for Leeds United FC.

By Rail

Elland Road is about one and a half miles from Leeds station.

By Bus

Head for Neville Street where a shuttle runs to the ground. Come straight out of the station, walk across the car park and down the steps. Turn right and you will see the buses under the railway bridge.

There is a visitors' car park at the ground or free street parking on Low Fields Road. Further away you can find less crowded parking in the Holbeck area, north east of Elland Road, a ten minute walk.

Avoid Heath Estate, adjacent to the South Stand, which is patrolled by wardens.

Pubs Near Elland Road

The White Hart

This pub is located at the top of wesley street behind the south stand it is good pub for away fans as there are always lots in. It gets busy nearer kick off, so get there early. There is a beer garden at the back which is usually open, and there is usually a game of football in the garden for the kids during the better weather.

The Old Peacock

This is the only pub near Elland Road, and is located directly opposite the ground. There is always a good mixture of home and away fans in there. The atmosphere is generally of good nature and banter, although that depends on the quality of away fans!!! Billy Willis, a sunderland fan has e-mailed us, and says 'away fans can no longer get into the old peacock'

The General Elliot

This is one of Leeds' more interesting and neglected pubs. Its Orwellian ambience and down-market clientel is redolent of the proletarian boozer that Winston Smith frequents in '1984'. It is precisely the kind of incongruous, anachronistic and rapidly vanishing happy-house that I like to find on my football travels. And it has v. good and v. cheap beer. Sam Smiths. It is situated on Kirkgate opposite the markets (surprise, surprise).
