The first meeting at Pontefract, as recorded in the Racing Calendar, took place in 1801. Pontefract stages Britain's longest handicap on the Flat, The Tote Marathon Handicap.
Description: A left-handed oval, undulating course of two miles with a short run-in of two furlongs and a stiff uphill finish of three furlongs. The course is considered to be the longest continuous Flat Racing Course in Europe, and possibly the world.
Accompanied children under 16 years are admitted free of charge.

Location
The racecourse entrance is only half a mile from Junction 32 of the M62, which is close to the intersections of the A1 and M1. For rail travellers, Pontefract is served by three stations - Monkhill, Tanshelf and Baghill.
