Our Impressions of Palmerston Park

Palmerston Park is a historic ground, reputed to have the highest floodlights in Scottish football. It has two seated stands; the 'Dumfries and Galloway Standard Grandstand' ( Main stand ) and the 'Galloway News Grandstand' ( East Stand ). The main stand fills the middle third of the west side and is flanked by open terracing. It seats just under 1500 people and also houses the changing rooms, offices, Queen of the South Bar and the Club Shop ( Open most days ). The East Stand was erected during 1994/5, and is nicknamed the 'Andy Thomson' stand ( His sale for ?250,000 to Southend going a long way in funding its construction ). It has a capacity of approximately 2,200, and has both a home and away supporters section. Both stands have food outlets.

The North end is the Glasgow street/Portland Drive end and has covered terracing, holding several thousand fans. It has the usual complement of food outlet and toilets and is the 'Noise Factory' of Palmerston; famed for its bagpipes, drums, enthusiastic singing and airhorns ( until the security stopped the later ). Opposite this is the terregles street end. This is open terracing ( formerly the away supporters section ) but is not used on matchdays.

Subject to use/disuse of Terregles street ( and safety restrictions ), the capacity is between 6,500-7,500.

Directions to Palmerston Park

By Road

The best route is to join the Dumfries bypass until you reach the Glasgow road. Follow this towards the town centre; the ground off a few streets on the right hand side as you enter the town. Aim for either Tesco or the Dumfries Ice Bowl for parking ( As both are within 100 metres of the ground on either side).

Car Parking

Parking specifically for QOS is limited to a cramped car park at the back of the main stand, and this is almost entirely filled by officials, team buses, QOS backroom staff's cars, etc. Attempting to park here is not advised, particularly since there is a Tesco supermarket behind the main stand and the Dumfries Ice Bowl behind the new stand - both are less than 25 metres away and have ample parking spaces.
A grass overflow car park is located next to the Tesco so parking is not a problem. The Ice Bowl also provides an excuse for guys to take their families to a match - drop them off for skating while the men watch the football!
