Our Impressions of King George V Playing Field

The only covered accommodation is a small stand on the northern side of the ground. This has no fixed seating but a few chairs are available inside. The ground itself slopes towards each goal from the centre circle and also down from the entrance side. There is a separate changing block on the far side of the clubhouse. Toilets are available within the clubhouse?

The clubhouse is outside of the enclosed part of the ground and contains a bar.
A kitchen that serves hot food and drinks can be found at the entrance end towards the bottom of the slope.

Directions to King George V Playing Field

By Road

From the north and west

Leave the A14 at the Ipswich West exit. Turn left towards Ipswich at the first roundabout (with ASDA opposite). Take the second exit at the next roundabout (note, at the time of writing the first exit is still under construction). You will travel past the Whitton United ground to your left. Continue to the traffic lights and turn left. The entrance to the ground is on your left immediately after the now closed Tooks Bakery. Note: the entrance is almost hidden between the bakery and a small row of houses. The entrance path is downhill and a bit bumpy and leads straight into the club car park.

From the south

At the junction of the A12 and A14 (with a large 'Toys R Us' opposite) turn west (left) onto the A14 towards Cambridge. Take the second exit (labelled Ipswich West) thereafter and continue as above.

From North or East Suffolk or East Norfolk

Choice 1: On the A12 continue past Woodbridge and Martlesham. At the junction of the A12 and A14 turn right towards the Orwell Bridge. Cross the bridge and continue past the A12 south exit and continue as from the south. Choice 2: Leave the A12 at the A1214 turning right (3rd exit) into Kesgrave. Continue along the A1214 straight through two roundabouts with traffic lights, and two more sets of traffic lights. At the bottom of the hill move into the right hand lane (this occupies the middle of the road) when it appears after two sets of bollards and, staying in the right hand, continue straight over the roundabout ahead of you. You will now be in the correct lane to turn right onto the Ipswich internal by-pass (there will be a shell garage to the right as you look). Continue round a bend to the left and gradually move to the right so you are in the correct lane at the traffic lights and roundabout ahead. Continue straight at the roundabout, through another set of traffic lights, over the railway bridge, over (second exit) the next roundabout, straight at the next set of traffic lights and roundabout and straight through the next two sets of lights keeping in the nearside lane for both. Continue down the hill moving into the outside lane when it appears, through the pedestrian lights and right at the double mini roundabout ahead onto the Norwich Road. Continue straight through the many sets of traffic lights ahead until you come to a set with a Land Rover dealership to your left. Turn right into the Old Norwich Road at these lights and the ground is on the left as described above. All data supplied by Richard from Ipswich - 07th September 2000

The King George V ground has three pitches as well as that used by Whitton United. The pitch immediately next door is used by the Whitton United 'A' team who play in the Suffolk and Ipswich League (SIL) (2.30pm kick -off, 2.00pm Nov to Feb).
Further along Norwich Road, away from Ipswich and to the right in Whitton Church Lane , the Whitton Sports Centre can be found on the left hand side. A number of SIL teams play here so there is a good chance that one or more of the four pitches will be in use on a Saturday afternoon.
If you arrive and find the match is off the nearest Jewson League Clubs are Needham Market, Ipswich Wanderers (on the other side of Ipswich), Felixstowe & Walton United, Stowmarket Town and Hadleigh United.
